140 Overdrive Switch
140 Overdrive Switch

I have need of the measurements for the location of the overdrive switch
in the dash. ( rather than just poking a hole somewhere) LHD. [STORY] My
old dash delaminated and disintegrated, there were enough usable pieces
to use for a template to make a new one ( meaning at least one layer was
interpretable). I used Black Walnut - and now the dash matches in appearance
the other wood pieces, I know this is not burled walnut, but I've selected
the woods well, and for the most part you'd not know, also I've had enough
of veneers - micro lumping. I also discretly reinforced the center section
with an aluminum piece where the old dash had cracked at the trafficator.
I cannot understand why there is a grab handle on a piece that is structurally
unable to handle it. I am debating if to put it back or not. As for the
overdrive switch, WELL I admit to it - I forgot to measure it! I put it
all back in the car, and low and behold, the switch was dangling - reminding
me of my stupidity. Whats worse is I have the cigarette lighter, but have
lost the socket, too many project at one time. ( Deep Sigh). Original wiring
is serviceable, but aging badly, sort of the way I feel. Lucas electrics
require use to be useable. [SUMMARY] Word of advice for those considering
dash replacement, buy it, don't build it. I could just as easily made 20
as one, jigs and all. Although I am proud of results... - Yours, John E.

John, The hole is 3/4 in. diameter and is centered at a point 3 1/2
in. from the side and 2 1/8 in. from the bottom. - Jon Schrock, 57 XK140

John, I see that you have already been given the o/d switch measurements
but I can help you with the cigarette lighter socket. I have a spare which
was fractured until I braised it yesterday. All you need to do is strip
of chrome, sand and finish and re-chrome again. You will also have to make
the small bracket which holds it in position. You are welcome to it if
you cannot find yours. I can mail it as it's light - just give me your
address. What's all this about a grab handle on the dash. There should
not be one so I would certainly not put the offending one back if I were
you ! - Regards, Peter Fielding, '55 140 DHC, '64 E Type
The offer for the lighter socket is much appreciated, and I will do
a bit more digging first, it has to be here,, somewhere. > What's all
this about a grab handle on the dash. There should not be one so I would
certainly not put the offending one back if I were you ! < Thank you!
Good timing. It never even occured to me that it wasn't original with "SMITHS"
markings cast into it, especially since everything else is pretty much
original. Time to look at some photos. I wonder what else I assumed was
original but was not. Also time to write down a better change history than
what I've been keeping. - John E. Currey
